| In my eyes the success of a piece comes from its ability to change. I am constantly adding to and subtracting from pieces until I feel I have achieved a certain balance; for this reason, I have a hard time working with concepts or overt imagery. Sometimes a piece ends up exactly as I envisioned it, and other times it changes drastically. The important thing for me is to see beyond an object's function and through to its shape and form. I have often purposely avoided imagery in the past. However, I have begun adding identifiable images in recent years, knowing that they will change enough to lend a certain mysterious quality to the work while maintaining a sense of familiarity. Even this quality is subject to change. My acceptance of this fate, I believe, gives me the ability to create without frustration, allowing the work to evolve. |
